Melandra - Glossop's Roman Fort
Uncover the Secrets of Ancient History

Melandra Roman Fort is the largest Roman site in High Peak and the only major Scheduled Monument in the northern part of the Borough. With the remains of the ramparts and headquarters building still visible today, visitors can see the scale and form of this 1st century Roman fort.
The site is located to the north of the Gamesley housing estate, to the north west of Glossop. The fort is currently owned by High Peak Borough Council and is in use as an open area for recreation; however, it is in poor condition and is on the Heritage at Risk Register.
Explore our website to learn more about the history of the fort and the previous archaeological excavations at Melandra. You can also find information on recent projects at the site and make comments about the future of the fort.

Melandra is the most intact Roman fort in the region, with ramparts still up to two metres high, a bath-house and a surrounding defended vicus (civil settlement). Excavations since 1899 have unearthed a large volume of finds, some unique, with potential for many more as the greater part of the site is still unexplored. To archaeologists both amateur and professional it is a very valuable site about which there are still many unanswered questions.
